King Pong (2003)

Text by Phillip Worthington

When asked to cook up anew sport, we decided to revisit one of the classic arcade games of our times and spice it up with a new flavour. Looking to get out of the monitor and into the park, King Pong is realtime lifesize PONG for real people in real places. This is PONG, but not as we know it. (Not suitable for all ages or people with heart problems or weak ankles)

Recipe for cooking up a game of King Pong:
You will need..

1x automated oversized pixel (radio control car in a white box will do)
6x length of string (50cm each will do)
8x pixel hat (square pieces of cardboard will do)
8x willing and able players (art students will do)
2x willing and able substitutes (what can I say, accidents happen)
2x willing and able linesmen (more students?)
1x wiling and able referee (an art school tutor will do)
1x park with wide road (preferably avoiding the traffic)
1x camera mounted in a very high place

Mix together in a large art school and bring to the boil
Once boiling, take to park and play until cool

For desert try playing back the recorded video at double speed.

And enjoy.
Best served with a glass of red table wine.
